The four FSM Chief Executives – FSM President Peter M. Christian, Chuuk State Governor Johnson Elimo, Pohnpei State Governor Marcelo K. Peterson, and Yap State Governor Lt. Governor James Yangetmai – led their respective delegations to Tumon, Guam, for the 22nd Micronesian Islands Forum (MIF) from May 1 – 3, 2017. This was the 22nd session of the MIF as established by the 21st session of the former Micronesian Chief Executives’ Summit (MCES) where the two Presidents of the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, one Minister representing the President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, four Governors of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Territory of the Guam, Chuuk State, and Pohnpei State and one Lt. Governor of Yap State would meet annually to reaffirm their commitments on behalf of their people and their governments, to establish closer ties, ensure future discussions and agree on initiative for the benefits of members and the Micronesian Islands.

The Summit was opened by outgoing Chairman of the 21st MCES, Palau President Remengesau, on the morning of May 1, 2017 and passed onto the incoming Chairman of the 22nd MIF, Guam Governor Calvo, who officially called the 22nd MIF Session to order and began his opening remarks and subsequently FSM President Christian, Palau President Remengesau, RMI Minister Silk, CNMI Governor Torres, Chuuk Governor Elimo, Pohnpei Governor Peterson, and Yap Lt. Governor Yangetmai gave their opening remarks.  The MIF Leaders paused in silence to remember Kosrae Governor Jackson who was absent due to the passing of an immediate member of his family.

The reports and recommendations from the nine standing committees were given, along with presentations on a number of issues of interest in the region and jointly directed action in the MIF respective jurisdictions and were reflected in the 22nd MIF Communiqué.  The Forum concluded with announcing the 23rd MIF venue will be held in CNMI, in which President Christian said he “reiterate[d] how this Forum has showcased our efforts to enshrine our Micronesia regional family” while joining the seven other MIF Leaders in giving their closing remarks and signing of the 22nd MIF Communiqué on May 2, 2017. 

While in Guam, the FSM Leaders joined the Host Government at the 2017 Guam Micronesian Island Fair to officially open the Fair on May 3, 2017.  

Accompanying the President, State Governors and Lt. Governor to the Forum were officials and representatives from the national and state offices, national agencies and national enterprises.
