International Day of Persons with Disabilities Commemorated

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—The United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was commemorated on Monday, December 3rd, with a community event in Madolenihmw, Pohnpei. Included among the approximately five hundred attendees were Honorable Reed B. Oliver, Lieutenant Governor for Pohnpei State, Monique Panaligan, Keynote Speaker and representative of the non-government organization (NGO) Pohnpei Women with Disabilities, youths, persons with disabilities, community and church leaders, Pohnpei State senators, and representatives from the FSM National and Pohnpei State Government. more>>

 

Updates on the MV Hapilmohl-1 & the State of FSM Ships

After a November 26th, 2018 joint inspection by FSM’s Department of Transportation, Communications & Infrastructure (TC&I) and Yap State Government, the MV Hapilmohl-1—commonly referred to as the H-1—was ready to be handed over to Yap State. On November 28th, 2018 after a luncheon attended by President Peter M. Christian, Governor Tony Ganngiyan, Senators Isaac Figir and Joseph Urusemal, and other distinguished guests representing all three branches of Yap State’s Government, Yap received operation rights to the ship once more. “The President boarded the ship before the luncheon…he was pleased, everybody was pleased, even shocked to see the ship in such good condition,” said Secretary of TC&I Lukner Weilbacher during a December 6th, 2018 meeting. more>>

 

President Christian Receives Credentials from His Excellency Giorgio Guglielmino, Ambassador of the Italian Republic

  PALIKIR, Pohnpei— On November 22nd, 2018, His Excellency President Peter M. Christian received credentials from His Excellency Giorgio Guglielmino, Ambassador of the Italian Republic commonly referred to as Italy.

Ambassador Guglielmino advised President Christian that the Italian Embassy in Manila, Philippines, will also be the liaison for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia. “We know you’d like to develop tourism,” the Ambassador said, “And we’d…like to direct Italians to the FSM…Italian tourists are keen to discover new places.” more>>

 

President Christian Receives Credentials from His Excellency Marian Tomasik, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic

PALIKIR, Pohnpei— On November 20th, 2018, His Excellency President Peter M. Christian received credentials from His Excellency Marian Tomasik, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic. President Christian spoke of the friendship between the Slovak Republic and the FSM, emphasizing to Ambassador Tomasik that one hasn’t seen the FSM until one has visited all four states.

President Christian, citing the Cotono Agreement—a treaty between the European Union and the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States (ACP Countries)—asked the Ambassador to assist in the European Union recognizing the Pacific as being separate from Africa in geography, culture, functions, and needs, particularly with regards to climate change. “We have a lot of islands facing climate change,” the President said, noting that some of these outer islands can be ignored or forgotten by the larger international community. more>>

 

President Christian Attends Yap Fiber Optic Ceremony

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—On November 29th, 2018 President Peter M. Christian, in addition to special guests from Nippon Electric Company (NEC) and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, participated in the Yap State Fiber Optic Cable Inaugural Ceremony held in Gilman, Yap. Organized by the Government of Yap in conjunction with the Federated States of Micronesia Telecommunication Cable Corporation (FSMT Cable), the event was a formal celebration of the completion and operation of the new fiber optic cable in Yap State. more>>

Federated States of Micronesia sends Typhoon Yutu Relief to CNMI

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—The Twentieth Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), during its Sixth Special Session,  passed a Congressional Act appropriating $170,000 to assist in funding relief efforts in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) after it suffered from the extraordinary effects of Typhoon Yutu. On November 27th, 2018 President Peter M. Christian signed the Congressional Act into law. Quoting from the law itself, $100,000 is allocated for “Mariana Islands Typhoon Yutu Relief” and $70,000 is for “subsidy to the different state-owned utilities companies in the FSM...to send linesmen and other emergency personnel to the CNMI for the relief effort.”

This is the second $100,000 donated to the CNMI by the National Government and the people of the FSM to assist in the wake of two separate typhoons. Typhoon Yutu, formed on October 21st, 2018 and dissipated on November 3rd, 2018 is the strongest typhoon to impact the CNMI on record. It was preceded by Typhoon Mangkhut in September, 2018 which prompted the FSM to donate $100,000 each to both the CNMI and Guam.  more>>

 

Making the Rights Real –The FSM National Disability Forum

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—The Federated States of Micronesia reflected on its implementation status of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in a National Disability Forum which was convened on November 20th-22nd, 2018 in Chuuk State. National and State Government and civil society groups, from all four states of the FSM, attended—as well as representatives of Disabled Persons Organizations. The theme for the National Disability Forum was “Making the Rights Real”, to emphasize the importance of ensuring that the articles in the CRPD are made a reality. more>>

FSM Embassy Attends the 2018 Global Smart City Summit (Yinchuan)

Beijing, November 15, 2018 (FSM Embassy)—Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission Vincent Sivas was dispatched to Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China to attend the 2018 Global Smart City Summit from November 13-16, 2018.  The 2018 Global Smart City Summit (Yinchuan) was jointly organized by Yinchuan Municipal People’s Government and China’s Electronic Corporation.  The summit was hosted at the Yinchuan International Convention Center with the theme of “Building a Green, High-end, Harmonious and Livable City.”  The 2018 Global Smart City Summit brought together more than 500 guests ranging from government, academia, as well as domestic and foreign experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs, to share their points and solutions in the process of building Smart Cities. more>>

FSM Promoted as a Tourism and Foreign Investment Destination at the GAIS 2018

Beijing, November 20, 2018 (FSM Embassy)—The FSM Embassy was invited to speak at the 2018 Global Angel Investment Summit in Wuhan, China on November 18, 2018.  More than 2,000 people attended the summit including 300 globally renowned investors, senior industry experts and outstanding entrepreneurs.  FSM Ambassador Carlson D. Apis was invited, along with ambassadors from Guyana, Maldives and Serbia, as a key note speaker.  The event provided a great opportunity for the Embassy to promote the FSM as a tourism and foreign investment destination. more>>

FSM Participates in the 5th Our Ocean Conference

Bali, Indonesia—His Excellency Peter M. Christian, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, along with a delegation of top officials, attended the 5th annual Our Ocean Conference from October 29th to October 30th, 2018. Focused on generating commitments and taking actions to maintain the sustainability of our oceans, the Our Ocean Conference has totaled more than 18 billion dollars in commitments from governments and organizations since it began in 2014.

This year’s conference focused on marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-change related impacts to the oceans. One of the key activities in this year’s conference was a plenary session, in which President Christian shared thoughtful remarks that were exceptionally well received—both in the form of applause and pledges to assist. more>>

30th Anniversary of FSM-Japan Diplomatic Relations

Tokyo, Japan—His Excellency Peter M. Christian, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, accompanied by the Honorable Speaker Wesley Simina and other members of the FSM Congress, the Honorable Speaker Innocenti Oneisom and other members of the Chuuk Legislature, and other members of the FSM Government, celebrated the 30th anniversary of formal FSM-Japan diplomatic relations at the Hotel New Ohtani on November 2nd, 2018. Attended by over 800 participants, including distinguished leaders in the Japanese Government and private sector, including the Honorable Masanao Ozaki, Governor of Kochi Prefecture, Madam Akie Abe, wife of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Honorable Keiji Furuya, House Representative and Chairman of the Japan-FSM Parliamentary Friendship League, the Honorable Mikio Shimoji, House Representative, the Honorable Toshiko Abe, State Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Yoshiro Mori, and more, the event was widely regarded as one of, if not the, largest celebration of diplomatic relations the FSM has ever had. more>>

Federated States of Micronesia first Pacific Island Country to Complete the Joint External Evaluation of the International Health Regulations

August 13-17, 2018 – The FSM government became the first Pacific Island country to complete the Joint External Evaluation (JEE) of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Health Regulations (IHR 2005).  In his statement to the participants of the JEE, the Honorable Vice President Yosiwo P. George reaffirmed FSM government’s commitment to the implementation of the IHR 2005 and global health security. Recommendations of the technical experts will be provided to the FSM government as a means to further strengthen FSM health system. more>>

 

H.E. Ambassador Huang Zheng presented Credentials to President Peter M. Christian as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Peoples Republic of China in the Federated States of Micronesia

On Wednesday, June 06, 2018, President Peter M. Christian received the Letter of Credence of H.E. Huang Zheng, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in the FSM, in an official ceremony held at the President’s conference room.  During the ceremony, President Christian welcomed Ambassador Huang to the FSM and accepted his credentials as the new Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the FSM. The President expressed the FSM’s appreciation for the speedy appointment as an indication of China’s continued support and commitment to strengthen FSM and China relations.  more>>

23rd Micronesia Islands Forum (MIF) held in Saipan, CNMI

President Peter M. Christian was joined by the Chuuk Governor Johnson Elimo, Pohnpei Governor Marcelo K. Peterson and Yap Lt. Governor James Yangetmai, and their respective delegations, to Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), to attend the 23rd Micronesia Islands Forum (MIF) on April 25 – 27, 2018. The MIF is comprised of Chief Executives, namely: the Presidents of the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the four Governors of Chuuk State, Pohnpei State, Yap State, and Kosrae State, and the Governors of the Territory of Guam and CNMI.  The Chief Executives met to reaffirm their commitments on behalf of their people and their governments to the Micronesian Region as a whole, in order to establish closer ties among themselves, continued constructive dialogue and cooperation upon issues of mutual interest, and agree upon initiatives that benefit the MIF members and the Micronesian Region. more>>

FSM endorses its Country Program for the Green Climate Fund - 1st in the Pacific and 4th globally

The Federated States of Micronesia has completed its Country Program for the Green Climate Fund and President Peter M. Christian has endorsed the document.  FSM is the first Pacific country to submit a Country Program to the Green Climate Fund, and is now set to start developing its nationwide priority projects and begin accessing climate change financing from the Fund. 

The FSM Country Program has been in development since the inception workshop in November 2016. A final workshop to validate the ‘green growth’ oriented Country Program and its projects portfolio was held in August 2017 in Pohnpei State.  The Country Program is an outcome of nationwide stakeholders’ engagement in addressing the FSM’s financing needs for resilient development.  For the first time, FSM has a consolidated framework to develop large scale, cross-sectoral projects and programs which can transform its economy into a ‘green economy’ and make sure our communities thrive while adapting to climate change. more>>

 

18th Micronesian Presidents’ Summit held in Majuro

The 18th Micronesian Presidents’ Summit (MPS) was held in Majuro of the Republic of the Marshall Islands on February 27, 2018 with two new additional members.  The MPS is an annual Summit of the Presidents of the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands and Republic of Palau but this year, the Republic of Nauru and Republic of Kiribati joined for the first time.  

The Summit is an annual event for the Micronesian Presidents to discuss issues of common concern at the national, regional and international levels.  The five Presidents signed the Delap Joint Communique based on discussions by the Presidents on a whole range of issues such as air space management and air services, regional maritime cooperation, regional vocational cooperation on agriculture, trade, technology, and related issues.  The Presidents also discussed issues concerning climate change, and sustainable sea transport. more>>

The purpose of the visit was to attend a close-out ceremony in Chuuk State for Typhoon Maysak. The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), through its Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, had on 4 August 2017, registered with the United Nations a Treaty between the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) concerning maritime boundaries and cooperation on related matters.  The Treaty signed in Majuro, the Capital of the RMI on 5 July 2006, came into force in accordance with its article 7 on 24 July 2015. more>>

President Peter M. Christian received His Excellency Arifin Tasrif as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the FSM with residence in Tokyo, Japan.  

 

During the ceremony, President Christian congratulated him on his new appointment and for being the first to present his credentials (POC) in the year 2018. He further acknowledged the importance of Ambassador Tasrif’s presentation of credentials by bringing the largest delegation to Pohnpei.  He also expressed his confidence that the close relationship between FSM and Indonesia will continue to grow in the years ahead as we continue to engage in issues of mutual interest. more>>

On Friday morning of January 12, 2018 President Peter M. Christian received the Letter of Credence of H.E. Jaideep Mazumdar, Ambassador of the Republic of India to the FSM, in an official ceremony held at the President’s new conference room.

During the ceremony, President Christian welcomed Ambassador to the FSM and thanked him for taking his time to visit the FSM to formally present his credentials as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the FSM. Among other issues discussed in the meeting, President Christian indicated the air service, agriculture and capacity building are critical to FSM’s economic development. He also indicated that climate change is still a top priority for FSM. more>>
